IT–OT Integration: From Machine Data to Action

A connected plant needs more than values on a screen. The project must define what the data means, who acts on it and how the result is recorded.

Start with one operational question

Choose a question such as: which stoppage caused a missed order target, which assembly lacks a test result, or which production confirmation was rejected by ERP? A specific question makes the required events and interfaces easier to define.

Check the source of each signal

Identify whether the data comes from a controller, meter, scanner, test instrument or operator entry. Record access permission, device model, supported interface, data type and units. A network connection alone does not prove that the required machine data is available.

Add production context

A count needs a defined time period and product or order context. A quality result needs a part or batch identity and inspection criteria. Agree how shifts, changeovers, rework and missing identifiers will be handled before presenting aggregated results.

Design the response

For an exception, define the recipient, acknowledgement, escalation and closure record. A notification is useful only if the receiving team understands the required action. Remote commands or changes to machine operation require a separately reviewed controls scope and site authorization.

Test failure and recovery

A pilot should examine connection loss, delayed events, duplicate transactions and rejected messages. Agree buffering and reconciliation behaviour where required. Compare a representative operating period with independent records before extending to more equipment.

Treat access and security as design inputs

Define the approved network paths, user roles, credentials and maintenance access. OPC UA includes authentication and communication-security mechanisms, but the selected products and deployment still need appropriate configuration. A protocol label is not a complete security design.
